New year blast @ Times Square, NYC

By Tejaswinee Havaldar
I am back..  after a loooooooooooooong time..
Here's about my New Year Celebrations to welcome 2009 at New York City.. We planned to join the biggest new year party in the world celebrated at times square, NYC and watch the crystal ball descending... Thanks to Sunny, We could stay at times square and enjoy the evening like never before... Sort of once in a lifetime experience. Sunny's flat is situated just one block away from the crystal ball dropping event. The party was to start at 6 PM but because the crowd was building we started at 4.30 PM.. We stood there in the crowd for an hour and half. There we play a few games like "personality" and "finding the word". The temperature there at 4.30 PM was -6 degrees centigrade and then it gradually dropped to -8 by 6.00PM. Till then we were already frozen all 8 of us. So we finally decided to get back home and warm up.  Actually we could easily see the crystal ball right from the entrance of Sunny's apartment. So we thought of coming down sometime just before 12.00 AM and witness the event. Back home we played dumb charades then ate maggi and then we dances a bit. While we were at home they had distributed some free stuff like baloons, hats, chapstick etc to the entire crowd.. although we missed that.. we got to stay warm at home.. Then  at 11.30 we packed ourselved again to go down.. The crown down was very enthusiastic... it was a good scean to see so much crowd around.. an altogether differnt experience. We then witnessed the most awaited crystal ball drop which started exactly at 11.59 PM  and reached the destination at 12.00AM 1st jan 2009 :) . The guest of honor to initiate this event was Bill clinton and Hilary Clinton. After the event we just thought of having a walk along the way. As soon as we started to move there were some cars arrived there right in front of us and the cops were clearing the way. They were the cars where Bill and Hilary were to return in. And the suddenly from midst the crowd arrives Hilary clinton as just passes about a couple of feet away.. and i successfully captured her in a couple of snaps.. While i was busy clicking Hilary's snaps Bill clinton arrives and he passes just next to me.. I never imagined i will ever see him so close.. I didnt have to even spread my hand, if I had to touch him. There was so less security.. and I was so shocked to see him that close that I almost forgot to click his snap.. then by the time I click he had turned his back.. so could capture him only from back.. Then we continued our walk.. Looked all around the place and then went to McDonalds and had some burgars, frenchfries and coffee.  By this time we were completely frozen again. So, we came back home. So finally we ended a perfect New year Welcome celebration by sharing some memories on the year 2008...

My observations in USA -Part 1

By Tejaswinee Havaldar

Before I landed here. I had many views about life in USA. Now that I am already here, it is time to evaluate my views. Well, I cannot be evaluating all of them at once. So, I will start with the topic “superstition”. I believed that here people are more practical and don’t fall prey to superstitions. I thought that the existence of Santa Claus was the only untrue belief that children here had. But, I found that people here are no different. They all live on hopes and believe anything that will even remotely support their beliefs.

One simple example will be about the wishing ponds. When I reached here, I visited a mall named “Marketplace Mall”. Inside the mall there is a fountain. As I looked into the tank where water from the fountain falls, I found there were many coins in there. When I asked what those coins in there meant.. I got to know that people think that by dropping coins in this tank their wishes come true. I was surprised that people here follow all these things. Then, I thought that maybe this tank has some importance that I am not aware of.

Last weekend, I visited Watkins Glen. There as I mentioned there are a chain of waterfalls. So there is water everywhere. There too I found a wishing pond. I was surprised to see so many wishing ponds around... But then I got to know that people here toss coins whenever they see water. Strange but true…………

Watkins Glen Hiking and Trekking

By Tejaswinee Havaldar

Watkins Glen Hiking:

We started from Rustic at 9.30 and reached the Watkins Glen spot at 11.45 AM. It did not look like a trekking or hiking spot. I was actually confused why I was there after seeing the sight. But after walking a quarter mile… I found why I was there. Awesome scenery, chain of waterfalls and all colored trees in the universe were there… what a beauty!!!!!!!

Its said that a picture speaks thousand words… so take a glimpse yourself….

It was really worth the walk – for those who hate walking..

While returning we tried enjoying the 2 hour journey by playing Antakshari……

But this is not India.. and people here wanted to sleep and we had to maintain silence in bus.. ufff… other than the traveling part of it.. the entire tour was maaaaaaastt

Enjoy a few more pics:

From Mumbai Airport to Rustic Village..

By Tejaswinee Havaldar

For your information let me tell you that Rustic village is like a apartment township.

Ok now that I reached mumbai airport, I had mixed feelings... One that I wont be meeting my family as frequently from now on..and the other was, I really did not have any idea of staying alone even in India forget US.......This was the first time I was gonna stay away from home.. I bid farewell to all and proceeded to check in my baggage and collect my boarding pass. My baggage got over weight and I had to actually pay fine for that.I was asked to check in my hand baggage too......So I was left with my leather jacket and my certificates to take care of.

I then went in for security check and then waited in lobby (with 4 others) for our flight to start boarding. We then got to know that out flight was reschedules from 12.20 AM to 1.00 AM. My roomie and I along with 3 more friends were eagerly waiting for our flight announcement... just 5 mins b4 the flight announcement, Yashank(One among the 3 friends) announced that his passport wasn't with him.. We searched his pockets and hand bag but of no use. Then One friends along with Yashank went to check out if it was fallen on the way from security check. While they searched he realised that he had left it on currency exchange counter . So finally he got the passport. We then went to gate 25 to board flight. There was another security check just before boarding the flight. After that we boarded the flight. We used to remind yashank now and then about his passport.

In flight I had a right window seat. Flight arrangement was 3 3 3.. My roomie and yashank has seats far from our place where as the rest of us sat together. We had fun in flight. I had planned to stay awake till 4- 4.30 so I thought of watching movies.. There were few movie which I had not seen.. I started with Khoya Khoya chand but couldnt stand the movie more than 15 mins. I switched to Laga Chunari main daang.. well I knew what type of movie this was. But, I just wanted to check it out myself....

After this movie, I slept for around 4 hours....At times I used to check out status of my flight on screen and then look out of window to see how it looks.. for 75% of the journey, I could see only clouds.. Sometimes thick and sometimes thin......
I saw some mountains with some snow in between.. somewhere in Europe.. .. I slept again for around 2-3 hours.. At this time I had reached near Greenland.. The scene at Greenland was worth seeing.. There was snow everywhere.. amazing scene.

Things were going on pretty smooth. But how can the situation go on?? You know who was it this time?
Yashank again.. We saw some disturbance near the restroom so, I just went to check out. Yashank had flushed his gold ring (with puskaraj stone) . He was trying to speak to the air hostess but in vain. She said that once flushed, Its gone forever....

With all the shocking adventures we finally landed in JFK at around 7.30.. Till we get out of flight and collect our luggage for customs and immigration it was 8.00 AM. We had our next connecting flight at 9.00 Am to destination which we missed. We were rescheduled on the next connecting flight. We finally reached destination at 12.20 PM.. Shaanya was already waiting outside the airport along with the airport pickup guys from college.. Thus ends my Voyage :).. We then reached Rustic Village. Shaanya and Pavitra had kept the lunch ready for us. It was gr8. We the got fresh and went around the apartment. This ends my first day at rustic village........

My F1 VISA interview

By Tejaswinee Havaldar

I had my F1 VISA interview today. Here's my interview experience.

I had chosen to take up the VFS lounge service... I reached Mahalakshmi at 8.50 AM. My interview was scheduled at 9.30 AM. I first took coupons for VFS then, I changed at the VFS dressing room. I wore a semi formal shirt (lemon yellow base with pink vertical and horizontal lines) and blue jeans for the interview. I had not worn my interview attire when I left from home. I was ready by 9.00 AM. I then went to VISA consulate in VFS vehicle. People who take VFS service have a special line at the entrance. I got to enter immediately after I reached. I went through the checking and was handed a wooden piece. Then I collected my token and DS forms and stood in line for fingerprint scanning. One helper there collected my passport, DS forms and I-20 while I was in line.  My folder was heavy and I had made a point to carry all possible documents on earth that the VISA Officer (VO) could ask. Because of the weight my fingers got stressed and dry. The VO didn’t find my fingers in position to be scanned. The Helper there wiped my fingers with a wet tissue. The my finger scan began First 4 fingers on left then 4 fingers on right and lastly the left & right thumbs.  I wanted for my turn in the waiting area. Finally after a fifteen minutes wait I was called for the interview at window 11. She had actually called 5 people at a stretch. I was 3rd in line. There were 2 boys before me and they finished their interviews with half a minute so total wait there in line was about a minute. But, this one minute was somewhat frightening. As the long awaited moment would then arrive. I was actually tensed although I'm normally an easy going person. This time my dreams were dependent on F1 VISA........ There was nothing I could do from my side as I was ready with all documents and no lies.... And thinking what all may happen in there, I entered………………

VO : Good morning

Me: Good morning

VO: Give me your token

ME: (i passed the token)

VO: Why are you going to US?

Me: for MS in US

VO: Master's or bachelors (I think she did not hear MS)

Me: Master's

VO: Why did you choose RIT?

Me: did a survey and found itv was good for DBMS.. m interested in Databases and so I chose.

VO: ok..Who is sponsoror?

ME: I answered

VO: What does he do?

ME: I answered

VO: ok.. and asked a question on sponserer's specialization

Me: I answered

VO: ok your VISA is granted.

I was out of consulate by 10.00 AM.

Yipeee that was it. I was granted an F1 VISA…………………..

A trip to Harihareshwar and Srivardhan...

By Tejaswinee Havaldar

Today is my friend’s birthday………..

We had planned to go for an outing since long and finally this day arrived. We had planned to Visit Harihareshwar and Srivardhan around 200 km from Pune…

We had decided to start early at 6.00 AM. We were spread at 2 locations altogether. 3 boys were together at a place which is around 5 km from our place where we 6 girls were eagerly waiting. We had planned everything well. One was to wake up and start the heater. She was to finish with her morning tasks and while going in for the bath she was supposed to wake another girl. There were 2 bathrooms in the flat and so it would be 3 turns in each bathroom. We were on schedule and also check that the boys were up. Then our problems started. We got to know from boys (as they were supposed to be picked first) that the Tavera we booked was not of the format we had asked for……..

We had booked a Tavera keeping in mind that we are 9 are….. 4 people could accommodate at the back. 4 can sit in middle and 2 at front… and as we were only 9 we has space for one left. But the Tavera that came for our pick up was of format 1 in front, 2 in middle and 4 at back.. Only 6 people allowed…….. Oh no……. what should we do now….. We called the owner of Tavera we explained him that we were 9 and wanted the other Tavera and all but no use he had no there vehicles with him. All he could do is send another smaller car so that 3 left out could go in car. But then we did not want to split as splitting meant lesser fun……… Finally somehow the owner arranged for a Qualis from his friend. The Qualis reached our place at around 7.50 Am.. By that time we cooked some breakfast for ourselves and played some games at home……

As soon as the Qualis reached we all ran to get in.. We did not want to waste any more time.. We then started our journey……. But do you think our problems had ended???

Not really with fifteen minutes one of our Qualis tyres got punctured. Thank god we had a spare one so the driver fixed it soon……. We got started again.. The journey was pleasant with all beautiful sceneries around. We reached Harihareshwar at 12.00 PM. We visited the temple and had a glance at beach. Harihareshwar beach is considered risky and we had time only to play at one beach and so we thought we will enjoy at Srivardhan beach only. All were hungry by this time. There was one hotel nearby we had no choice. We went in. Some ordered vegetarian meals and some seafood meals. I had Seafood, The fried fish and prawns were awesome. I did not like the gravies though.

By the time we reached Srivardhan it was 4.00 PM. We had decided to start our return journey at 6.00 PM. Our driver took our leave saying he will get the punctured tyre fixed. We left all our bags (including purses/valets) and mobiles inside the Qualis and just kept the camera with us. We all enjoyed a lot at the beach and there wasn’t any one who was dry anywhere…… It was 5.00 then there wasn’t any sign of the driver. We started getting tensed as it won’t take and hour to fix one spare tyre… and more that we had all our belongings and money inside the qualis… We…….. Stopped playing and started thinking of other options to get back to Pune. At some distance we could see some people and some cars. We thought of checking out from them what all other options are open to us (keeping in mind that none of us had any money). When we reached to our relief there was our driver……Uffffffff.. Actually one car got stuck in the beach sand and many people (including our driver) were helping the car out of sand. Actually seeing the stuck car our driver was scared to come and so he parked Qualis at a safe distance. We were happy and tension free on knowing this. We quickly changed to dry clothes and eat some bhel (that was the only option available as we all were damn hungry). We started our journet back home at around 6.30 PM. We halted at a place for dinner and reached Pune by 11.00 PM………..

It was an exiting and adventurous outing………..

Internet-ization

By Tejaswinee

Today everyone, Kids or Adults; Girls or Boys; Rich or Poor, all use internet. Some use for gathering information, some for entertainment, some for time pass, other for some serious relations and many more...

When i date back to my childhood, I realize the difference in environments this generation X is been brought up. Once I was telling my sister, I am fed up searching a shop where i can buy a particular product-brand, my 6 year old niece who was playing nearby answered "Its Simple aunty, just visit Google & search there"!!!! I was left there dumb folded. Ufffff that’s the generation-x I was speaking about. This incident made me think how much the new generation is inclined towards the computers. Is this good or bad? Is it really necessary to be dependent on these machines for our day to day work?

Was life that difficult when there were no computers?

I have been reading about Internet marriages. They say its easier to find a suitable partner online as it increases the search results. I don’t say that all internet marriages are fake or dangerous But, there have been instances where internet marriages have proven as fraud. There are so many cases where a girl or boy searches a rich match online marries him/her stays with them for a couple of days/weeks then leaves them after their money is no more to him/her. Recently I read an incident; two students from a Russia have been jailed for committing matrimonial fraud with foreigners over the Internet.

One of the convicts, the 28-year-old woman, had sent out her pictures to a number of international matrimonial agencies. After exchanging letters with several men from the United States, Canada and Great Britain the girl asked potential fiancées to send her money so she could travel to their countries and meet them in person. Upon receiving the donations which amounted up to $3,000, the girl broke the correspondence.

The court sentenced both to prison terms in a minimum-security correctional labor facility. The girl was sentenced to 5 years and her partner got a 5.5 year prison term.

Isn’t this kind of belief stupid? Do people believe anyone without even checking the true identity of that person?

Strange... I find it strange.. what do you say?

Hackers- Are they good or bad?

By Tejaswinee

What do you feel when you read or hear the word Hacker?

Most of us have a bad impression when we hear this name..

A hacker is often someone who creates and modifies computer software or computer hardware, including computer programming, administration, and security-related items.

A Hacker can be intentionally good or Bad.

In computer programming, a hacker is a software designer and programmer who build elegant, beautiful programs and systems. A hacker can also be a programmer who hacks or reaches a goal by employing a series of modifications to exploit or extend existing code or resources.

A hacker with a negative intension is normally one who breaks into others secure systems, get passwords of others and all. He does all the ugly work on internet.

A hacker with a Positive intension is normally one who breaks into his own system to find the loopholes and make it more secure. He is the one who is appreciated for his efforts to make the system powerful.

In computer security, a hacker is a person who specializes in work with the security mechanisms for computer and network systems. While including those who endeavor to strengthen such mechanisms, it is more often used by the mass media and popular culture to refer to those who seek access despite them. In other technical fields, hacker is extended to mean a person who makes things work beyond perceived limits through their own technical skill, such as a hardware hacker, or reality hacker. In hacker culture, a hacker is a person who has attained a certain social status and is recognized among members of the culture for commitment to the culture's values and a certain amount of technical knowledge.

So has your previous impression about the Hackers changed?

Hacking is good as long as your intensions are good.

So, Keep Hacking

Love is Life

By Tejaswinee

Love is a number of emotions and experiences related to a sense of strong affection or profound oneness. The definition of love is the subject of considerable debate. Depending on context, love can have a wide variety of intended meanings. Love does not only mean Romantic love, it can be Platonic love, religious love, familial love and many more of the sort. Love often involves caring for the person or thing you love.

There are different aspects of love. Love is stronger sentiment than like although there is not fixed line of demarcation between love & like. Its not that if you don’t love  a person you must hate him.. There can be something between love and hatred. Love and lust are 2 different things. Some people mix these 2 emotions and spoil the name of LOVE.

Love is an emotion which is very pure and divine.

Some people do not believe that love exists. These are those who have often been hurt by others in the name of love. Such people say that love is meaningless. But, still others do believe that love really exists, and is not an abstraction, but love is indefinable.

With so many beliefs that people have and such a variety of cultural differences it’s just not possible to have one definition of love that’s agreed by all. In this world, where there are people with enormous varieties of thoughts which makes it impossible to make people believe that there exists true love that’s pure and divine.

Some people think that money can buy anything and everything & even love. I don’t really blame them for their ignorance that led them to be proud. I just pity them because I feel they have never met real friends in their life. They must have always had enough money since childhood but have never been loved.

Love is sweet feeling. I personally feel that everyone should experience it at least once in their life time, let it be in any form.

Photonic computer

By Tejaswinee

This world is progressing at such a faster rate that we have no limits……

At first we has mainframes.. then we have microcomputers that were much faster.. then laptops for portability.. then palmtops and all BUT, we are still not satisfied with the speed so what’s next? Can you guess??

Well……….it is Photonic computer…. Have you heard of it? If not then what are you waiting for? Read on & be set to face the future..

Today we use the movement of electrons in-and-out of transistors to perform logical functions in our computer. Photonic computing is intended to use photons or light particles, produced by lasers, in place of electrons.

Advantages of photonic computer:

·        Compared to electrons, photons are much faster. Light travels 3*108m/s and has a higher bandwidth too.

·        Computers work with binary, on or off, states. A completely optical computer requires that one light beam can turn another on and off. (photonic logic component is built by utilizing light interference)

·        Light interference is very frequency sensitive. This means that a narrow band of photon frequencies can be used to represent one bit in a binary number. Many of today's electronic computers use 64 or 128 bit-position logic. The visible light spectrum alone could enable 35 billion bit positions.

Trapping light is seen as a necessary element in replacing electron storage for computer logic. If the research emerges to be successful then there will be nothing like it.

Many people still see photonic computer as impractical. Research is still on.

Optical switches switch optical wavelengths. Optical switching, while not all-optical, has already become important in networking environments.

10 terabit-per-second data-handling is expected within the decade …… that’s great isn’t it? I am just waiting for a photonic computer to be in reality.
